I'm keeping a log of all the service that I'm having done or doing to this motorcycle, and I figured I could keep it online just as easily. I have no idea if this will be helpful to anyone other than myself. I'm trying to keep price data for the Le Mans, as well.
2002 | |||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Date | Mileage | Service | Mechanic/Location | Price | Notes |
July 18, 2002 | 3 | Pre-delivery inspection | Moto International | inclusive | none |
July 25, 2002 | 15 | Installed raised bars | Moto International | $388 | Included making new brake and clutch lines |
July 25, 2002 | 15 | Installed lowered footpegs | Moto International | $396 | Including different shift and brake levers |
August 4, 2002 | 238 | Installed Napoleon bar-end mirrors | Ian Johnston | $65.17 | None |
August 25, 2002 | 534 | Installed Gorilla bike alarm | Ian Johnston | $81.60 | Mounting locations on the Le Mans are surprisingly sparse -- had to mount the siren box up near the headlight in the fairing. Velcroed the tilt sensor under one of the horizontal sections of fairing next to the tank. Seems to work well, but I might have been happier with an immobilizer and a blinkenlight. |
September 7, 2002 | 699 | First/600 mile service | Moto International | $250.95 | First service includes the following:
Used petro Kendall 20W50 for the engine, 80W140 for hypoid oil, and added Power Punch in the rear drive (high pressure additive). |
September 16, 2002 | 805 | Removed fairing-mounted mirrors | Ian Johnston | $1.50 | Installed M6x1 x 16mm stainless steel button head bolts in their place. |
October 19, 2002 | 1535 | Swapped engine computer with that of another bike | Moto International | $0 | Trying to see if the engine computer is responsible for low gas mileage. |
October 26, 2002 | 1580 | Adjusted pulse sensor gap | Moto International | $0 | Trying to determine the source of intermittent misfiring. |
November 9, 2002 | 1651 | Reinstalled original ECU, replaced TP sensors, balanced throttle bodies, retuned engine | Moto International | $0 | More attempts to eliminate the intermittent misfiring problem. Bike starts much easier on cold mornings now, and hasn't misfired after two days of riding, problem may be fixed. |
December 4, 2002 | 1911 | Readjusted fuel mixture | Moto International | $0 | Still trying to correct the ongoing intermittent misfire or cutting out. It had been appearing when cruising with neutral throttle at around 4000 RPM. MI reports that the engine was running significantly too lean, but only after warming up. |
December 31, 2002 | 2230 | Pulse sensor resealed | Moto International | $0 | Noticed oil down the forward left side of the engine casing, turned out to be the pulse sensor (previously removed and reshimmed) leaking oil. Reinstalled with sealant. |
2003 | |||||
Date | Mileage | Service | Mechanic/Location | Price | Notes |
January 2, 2003 | 2250 | Installed Hepco & Becker Journey sidecases | Ian Johnston | $680 | The bags finally arrived (ordered in July 2002), and fit a helmet well. Installed, the block the mirrors, so they'll be for occasional use only. |
March 5, 2003 | 2653 | Warranty service on leaking final drive | Moto International | $0 | The vent/filler bolt in the final drive had started to leak oil as seen here. The rubber on the sealing washer was ripped. All crush washers were replaced with aluminum crush washers, and the final drive was filled with only 310cc of oil compared to the prescribed 375cc. 15cc of moly was added as well. |
March 6, 2003 | 2665 | Warranty service on leaking final drive | Moto International | $0 | Using less oil didn't work, so a different vent bolt was substituted -- the original bolt had a slightly movable vent cap, and we theorize that this was causing the leak. The new bolt has solved the problem. |
March 22, 2003 | 2972 | Changed engine oil | Ian Johnston | $6.16 | Used three quarts of Castrol GTX 20W50, no filter change this time. |
April 17, 2003 | 3305 | Resealed pulse sensor again | Moto International | $0 | Pulse sensor was weeping oil down the left side of the engine case again. Previous sealant had apparently "dried up." |
April 17, 2003 | 3305 | Installed Agostini/Mistral exhaust crossover | Moto International | $0 | Borrowing this crossover to evaluate it for Dave at MI. Evaluating impact on gas mileage and engine performance. |
May 15, 2003 | 3664 | Replaced final drive housing, installed Stucci crossover | Moto International | $0 | Borrowing this crossover to evaluate it for Dave at MI. Evaluating impact on gas mileage and engine performance. Final drive housing was losing paint in large flakes. |
June 17, 2003 | ~3800 | Rear brake line replaced, reinstalled stock crossover | Moto International | $0 | The rear brake line had melted through due to the Stucci crossover being a different shape than the stock unit. Replaced with the original MG part, and securely fastened out of the way of the exhaust. |
September 16, 2003 | 5000 | Checked valve clearance adjustment | Ian Johnston | $0 | Valves were spot-on at the suggested .15mm intake and .20mm exhaust settings. |
September 20, 2003 | 5007 | Replaced steering damper | Ian Johnston | $0 | The old damper had been leaking for a while. Warranty replacement from MGNA. |
October 31, 2003 | 5381 | Replaced front tire with Michelin Pilot Road 120/70-R17 | Moto International | $149.60 | Bought online at discountmotorcycletire.com. |
November 21, 2003 | 5494 | Transferred amateur radio license plate to the Le Mans | Ian Johnston | $12.25 | Not exactly service, but I include it in the interests of tracking expenses, and for later reference. |
December 13, 2003 | 5627 | Greased rear driveshaft U-joint and driveshaft | Ian Johnston | Grease gun: $10; Fittings: $5; Grease: $5.41 | Tried to see how to grease front U-joint, but it's not terribly obvious. That service will have to wait until I get a stand and can take the rear wheel off. Grease supplies should be enough to last me for 5+ years, possibly quite a bit longer. |
2004 | |||||
Date | Mileage | Service | Mechanic/Location | Price | Notes |
January 8, 2004 | 5665 | Replaced front tire with Bridgestone BT-020 | Moto International | Tire: ~$100; Installation: $37.80; 90° valve stem: $16.15 | Bought the tire from discountmotorcycletire.com. MI "talked me into" the 90° valve stem -- I've been wanting one for a while. |
January 13, 2004 | 5696 | Installed BMW power socket | Ian Johnston | Socket: ~$20, wire, etc: ~$5 | Installed in fairing panel forward of instruments. |
January 20, 2004 | 6058 | Had seat reshaped and recovered | Rich's Custom Seats | $435.20 | Had it covered in basic black leather, with gel insert. Seat comfort is noticably improved even on short rides. |
January 24, 2004 | 6071 | Dropped off bike for engine case swap | Moto International | $0 | Engine case will be replaced, engine will be dynamically balanced, oil tube PN0100 5701 will be replaced. |
March 19, 2004 | 6071 | Got bike back from the shop | Moto International | $357.12 | Engine case was replaced, engine was dynamically balanced, oil tube PN0100 5701 was replaced. New oil and filter added. Valve adjustment due in about a week. |
March 27, 2004 | 6199 | Valve adjustment, head retorque | Ian Johnston | $0 | Valves set to .15mm intake, .20mm exhaust. Heads retorqued to 30 ft/lb. Idle significantly improved -- valves had been very tight. |
March 27, 2004 | 6210 | Synchronized throttle bodies | Ian Johnston | $0 | Only very minor adjustment required. |
March 27, 2004 | 6210 | Checked brake pad wear | Ian Johnston | $0 | Front pads are at about 3.9 mm. Rear are at 1.9 mm and need to be replaced as soon as Moto International opens on Tuesday. |
March 28, 2004 | 6210 | Replaced spark plugs (NGK BPR6ES) | Ian Johnston | $4.33 | None |
March 28, 2004 | 6250 | Replaced transmission and final drive oil | Ian Johnston | $34.79 | Used Mobil 1 75W140 |
March 31, 2004 | 6285 | Replaced rear brake pads | Ian Johnston | $22.85 | None |
April 8, 2004 | 6516 | Oil pan resealed | Moto International | $0 | It was weeping a bit of oil after the case swap. |
April 14, 2004 | 6519 | Re-adjusted valves | Ian Johnston | $0 | Right-hand cylinder was clattering, turns out it was noticably loose on both valves. Left exhaust valve was also tightened slightly. |
May 27, 2004 | 6985 | Re-taped rear turn-signal connectors | Ian Johnston | $0 | The turn signals were intermittently popping their fuse while riding in the rain. Old tape was half-off, soaking wet and crusted with dirt. This is not an ideal solution, but I don't have time to do it right at the moment. (I also don't know if this will solve the short-circuit problem, but it's the most likely solution.) |
August 7, 2004 | 7645 | Replaced air filter | Ian Johnston | ~$13 | None |
August 14, 2004 | 7645 | Installed intercom and 2-way radio system | Ian Johnston | unknown | I will be posting a full write-up of this system and installation later. |
August 15, 2004 | 7645 | Installed BikeMaster "Superbike" handlebars | Ian Johnston | $75 | Used Moose Racing handlebar clamps. Installed to replace cracked Two Brothers Racing clip-ons. |
October 31, 2004 | 8389 | Removed starter; inspected starter and flywheel gears | Ian Johnston | $0 | Starter has been acting up lately, as if the solenoid is cutting out, or teeth are missing on the flywheel. Flywheel gear is in good shape, some bright spots, but no obvious damage. Didn't test the starter on the bench, but that's the next step. |
November 13, 2004 | 8591 | Topped up engine oil | Ian Johnston | $0 | Took about 400 ml |
