Ninja 250 gas mileage

Posted December 2, 2003

This is a set of graphs showing my gas mileage on the 2001 Ninja 250 I acquired this summer. I will be updating it every few months, so you can get an idea of what gas mileage I'm getting on this efficient little bike.

I ride this bike primarily in-town, for commuting, so my mileage is significantly lower than it could be, if I were spending a lot of time on the freeway riding at steady speeds. The high spikes in the graph are times I was riding more on the freeway, or out in the country. Low points are where I was riding primarily in-town (less than 50 MPH/80 Km/H and a significant number of stops).

The tank is filled to a consistent level each time while the bike is parked on the centerstand, and the odometer, trip odometer and gallons filled are entered into a program on my PDA, which records the information for later processing. These graphs are produced using Gnuplot and some custom Perl I wrote.

Here is the raw data behind these graphs.

The green line shows the running average (mathematical mean) of the gas mileage. Each graph shows its generation date near the bottom of the chart.

This graph shows the same information, but in litres per 100km, and the distance travelled in kilometers, for our European readers. Smaller numbers represent better efficiency.
